Warm weather means longer walks, fun in the sun, and more time outdoors — but it also comes with hidden dangers for your furry friend. One of the most overlooked risks? Hot asphalt. It might seem harmless to us, but for dogs, it can cause painful burns and lasting damage.
Why asphalt is dangerous for dogs?
On a sunny day, when the air temperature is 30°C (86°F), asphalt can heat up to over 55°C (130°F). That’s hot enough to fry an egg — and more than enough to burn your dog’s paw pads in just seconds.
Unlike humans, dogs don’t wear shoes. Their paw pads may seem tough, but they’re actually quite sensitive and can suffer from blisters, peeling skin, or infections if exposed to extreme heat.
🖐️ Not sure if it’s too hot? Do the 5-second test
Before stepping out, place the back of your hand or bare foot on the pavement for 5 seconds.

✅ Easy ways to protect your dog from hot pavement
🕗 1. Walk during the cooler hours
Plan your walks early in the morning or later in the evening, when the sun is low and the asphalt has had time to cool. Avoid the time window between 10:00 and 18:00, especially on clear, sunny days.
🌳 2. Stick to grass and shaded paths
Choose routes through parks, grassy fields, or tree-lined sidewalks. These areas are much safer and more pleasant for your dog’s paws.
🧤 3. Consider paw protection
If walking on hot surfaces is unavoidable, use dog booties or apply protective paw wax or balm. These can reduce direct contact and prevent minor injuries.

Always bring fresh water and offer it frequently. Overheating can make your dog more vulnerable to stress and paw injuries.
🛑 5. Learn the signs of paw burns
After every walk, check your dog’s paws. Redness, limping, licking paws excessively, or whining are signs that your dog may have been burned.
